The CPU is located on the motherboard, under the thermal module.

To remove the CPU, first remove the optical drive...

To remove the CPU, lift the lever out of its clip on the socket and swing the lever straight up.

Note: Images shown may be from another motherboard

 

Carefully lift the microprocessor up out of the socket...

Caution: The pins of the CPU are fragile and easily bent. Leave the processor in the socket until you are ready to replace it with a new one.

To install the processor, make sure you identify pin 1 position by noting the yellow mark on the corner of the chip assembly. 

  Remove 
the plastic socket cap from the socket of a new motherboard.

Align the processor to pin 1 on the motherboard...

  Pin one and notches on the processor

...and insert the processor into its socket.

Lock the connector lever to hold the microprocessor in place, making sure the lever fits snugly into the clip

Clean off thermal residue from the thermal module...   Clean the thermal module

...and apply fresh thermal compound to the processor before replacing the thermal module.   Apply new thermal compound to the CPU
