Transcript: Troubleshoot section


The Troubleshoot section of HP Support Assistant allows customers to examine the status of various components of the computer in detail.

To access the Troubleshoot section, the customer needs to click the Troubleshoot area of the HP Support Assistant home screen.

The Troubleshoot screen lists several categories, and customers can select the category that they want to troubleshoot.

Click the Storage Devices area.

The Storage Devices category opens on the Hard Drives tabbed page by default.

This tabbed page lists any actions pending for the hard drives and provides information about the drives and the volumes on them.

To find out about the flash media installed on the computer, customers click the Flash Media tab.

The Flash Media tabbed page lists the flash drives connected to the computer, any actions pending for them, and information about the drives and the volumes on them.

To find out about the optical drives installed on the computer, customers click the Optical Drives tab.

The Optical Drives tabbed page lists the optical drives connected to the computer, any actions pending for them, and information about them.

Click the Backup and Recovery tab.

The Backup and Recovery tabbed page lists recovery disks and volumes that are available.

In the Resources area, customers can launch various backup and recovery utilities.

Click the Troubleshoot button to return to the Troubleshoot screen.

To view a summary of the computer's specifications, customers click the General Specifications area.

The General Specifications tabbed page lists hardware specifications and also indicates the current configuration of settings such as graphics memory and screen resolution.

Scrolling down reveals more specifications, as well as a link that launches the Ease of Access Center.

Customers click the Troubleshoot button to return to the Troubleshoot screen.

To troubleshoot display issues, customers click the Graphics, Video and Display area.

The Graphics, Video and Display tabbed page lists details about the graphics adapter and driver. It also states the current video memory and display resolution.

Customers click the Troubleshoot button to return to the Troubleshoot screen.

To troubleshoot connectivity and wireless issues, customers click the Network and Internet Connectivity area.

The Network and Internet Connectivity tabbed page lists details about networking devices and web browsers that are installed on the computer.

Customers click the Troubleshoot button to return to the Troubleshoot screen.

Click the Audio and Sound area.

The Audio and Sound tabbed page provides information about the installed audio devices and CODECs, as well as the current volume setting.

Customers click the Troubleshoot button to return to the Troubleshoot screen.

To find out more about the warranties and services that apply to the computer, customers click the Registration, Warranty and Services area.

The Registration, Warranty and Services tabbed page provides the computer's registration code, and lists the start and expiration dates for the warranties and CarePAQs that apply to it.

Customers can also find out more about the warranty by clicking the Warranty button at the bottom of the HP Support Assistant window.

Click the Warranty button.

The Warranty window opens and provides details about the product warranty.

Click the OK button.

Customers click the Troubleshoot button to return to the Troubleshoot screen.

The customer can click the scrollbar to scroll all the way to the bottom of the list of categories.

To access controls for performance tuning and system maintenance, customers click the Performance and Maintenance area.

The Performance and Maintenance category opens on the Performance tabbed page by default.

This tabbed page displays settings that affect the performance of the computer. The Resources area of the page contains links that allow customers to perform tasks that improve the computer's performance.

To troubleshoot drivers and firmware, customers click the Software, Drivers and BIOS tab.

The Software, Drivers and BIOS tabbed page lists pending actions related to software or firmware, and indicates the currently installed BIOS version.

In the Resources area, customers can add and remove software.

They click the System Errors tab to access the computer's error log.

The System Errors tabbed page lists any device errors that have previously been recorded in the computer's error log.

In this case, no such errors have been logged.

Customers click the Troubleshoot button to return to the Troubleshoot screen.

Click the Around the PC area to troubleshoot peripherals.

The Around the PC category opens on the Accessories tabbed page by default.

This tabbed page displays details of installed accessories. In this case, no details are listed because no accessories are installed.

To troubleshoot input devices, customers click the Keyboard, Mouse and Other Devices tab.

The Keyboard, Mouse and Other Devices tabbed page displays information about the keyboard, mouse, TouchPad, and any other input devices connected to the computer.

To troubleshoot printing issues, customers click the Printing and Imaging tab.

The Printing and Imaging tabbed page lists details of printers and virtual printing devices configured for the computer.

Customers click the Troubleshoot button to return to the Troubleshoot screen.

To monitor and troubleshoot power and thermal issues, customers click the Power, Thermal and Mechanical area.

The Mechanical tabbed page lists any pending actions related to the mechanics of the computer.

In this case, no such actions are pending.

Click the Power tab.

The Power tabbed page lists any pending actions related to the battery and power supply, and it displays the current status of the battery.

Customers click the Thermal tab to monitor the computer's thermal behavior.

The Thermal tabbed page lists any pending actions related to the temperature of components in the computer.

In this case, no such actions are pending.

Customers click the Troubleshoot button to return to the Troubleshoot screen.
