Thermal module removal

Before you begin : Remove the stand, optical drive door, rear cover, and minor bracket.

Note: the thermal module includes the fan, heat sink, and heat pipe.

Note: This content was developed with a pre-production computer that used Phillips-head screws. Your computer will have Torx-15 screws.

  1. Disconnect the fan cable from the system board.
  2. Remove the three P1 Phillips-head screws that secure the fan to the chassis .
  3. Loosen the four P1 captive screws that secure the heat sink to the chassis.
  4. Lift and remove the thermal module.

Thermal module replacement

Note:
Before replacing the thermal module remove the old thermal material from the chipset, processor, and heat sink. Apply new thermal pads or thermal grease to the chipset and processor.

  1. Align the thermal module with the screw holes on the chassis and system board.
  2. Tighten the four P1 captive screws on the heat sink in a 1-2-3-4 order as marked on the heat sink.
  3. Replace the three P1 screws that secure the fan to the chassis.
  4. Connect the fan cable to the system board.
